Pia Virolainen

Pia is a Finnish lighting designer based in Hamburg, Germany.

She has worked in many international houses both as a lighting designer and as an associate, including Teatro alla Scala Milano, Wiener Staatsoper, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, New York City Opera, National Center for the Performing Arts Beijing, Royal Danish Opera, Gothenburg Opera, Dutch National Opera, Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa, Opera Zuid in the Netherlands, De Koninklijke Schouwburg The Hague, Bilbao Opera, Oper Graz, Bregenz Opera Festival, Komische Oper Berlin, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Vereinigte Bühnen Wien and Leipzig Opera.

She has collaborated on several productions with directors Stephen Lawless and Stefan Huber, additionally to productions with Annilese Miskimmon, Lisa Kent, Jetske Mijnssen, Bjarte Hjelmeland, Alan Lucien Øyen and Christopher Tölle.

Her work as associate lighting designer includes musicals like Mamma Mia (29 European productions), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Oberhausen, Berlin, Moscow and Barcelona) and Mary Poppins (Scheveningen and Melbourne).
